The Minnesota Honey Producers Assoc. Inc.
About us:
The Minnesota Honey Producers Association (MHPA) is a non-profit organization made up of commercial and hobby beekeepers. The goal of the organization is to promote the use of honey and to provide a better understanding of the role of honeybees throughout the Midwest. The organization was founded in 1907, and is one of the largest in the United States today. The MHPA is one of the founding fathers of the Minnesota Agricultural Society.
MHPA exposure to the public is mainly at the Minnesota State Fair, where honey recipes are handed out in the horticulture building. Volunteers put on live bee and extracting demonstrations. Information is available about beekeeping and pollination. It is important for all people to realize how the honeybee helps farmers, gardeners and the backyard apple tree.
The organization meets twice a year to bring members up to date on the new developments and techniques of beekeeping. In addition, regional groups also meet periodically for specific interest in their region.
A newsletter is printed three times annually and is available to anyone who wishes to join as a member.

Protect the Pollinator
We are developing a “Protect the Pollinator” booklet. If members are interested in receiving one, they will be available in St. Cloud at the 2008 July MHPA meeting. This booklet has been made available through a grant from RMA (Risk Management Agency) through the MN Grown Department of Agriculture. This booklet is designed to help beekeepers be proactive in protecting themselves from bee losses.

Letter from the President
As this year comes to a close I am sure as I am sitting here writing this, and thinking of the year next to come, we all have our plans in the making. I was wondering what to write about so I had the last issue at hand and I fi nd the last paragraph of Fred Holte’s last president’s letter.
He talks of consequences of not attending the July 08 meeting. I asked those at that meeting to look to their right and left as they were seated at the meeting and was their neighbor in attendance? I asked why NOT and what they would be missing. I coincidentally didn’t remember Fred’s letter but as I review it just now as I write this, I now know what they missed and what they could have added to it.
Mr. Fred Holte has given much time to this organization and industry. He deserves many thanks. Please tell Fred the next time you see him, THANKS Mr. Past President and best regard. Also thanks to Russell Hofmann and Jeff Hull for their service on the board. Jeff is now vice president and Russell will remain on the promotion board where both will do a great job for the MHPA.
I have talked to a number of people about committee assignments and have made a few changes based on the size of the committee needs. Thank you to who have served, and if I have missed anyone or you would like to be part of something, please let me know. We on the board will be vigilant on any issue we may need to take care of for the membership of the MHPA. Now it is time to get busy planning for next year.
As always in beekeeping,
Your President,
Darrel Rufer
